Here are some of the best bars in Canberra for 2022. There has been a lot of change in bars over the past couple of years and there are a number of exciting new places to drink in 2022.
Let us know in the comments if there is a great bar that we’ve missed.
Molly
City
One of the best bars in civic, Molly is a cosy and intimate bar serving up some of the best cocktails in Canberra. Molly used to be located underground in a disused bank vault until the building needed to be demolished. While the new location doesn’t quite have the same character the bar is still hidden away in an alley. Molly has live jazz on some nights and can be packed, on other nights it’s perfect for a quiet drink after dinner.
Dear Prudence
City
If you’re looking for a great wine bar in the heart of civic then Dear Prudence is your best bet. Popular with the after work drinks crowd, Dead Prudence has a great range of wines by the glass and an even larger selection available by the bottle.
Brew Nation
City
Right next door to Dear Prudence is Brew Nation. As the name suggests Brew Nation serves craft beer on Tap and they also have a large range of craft beer cans.
Bar Rochford
West Row, City
Bar Rochford combines great food with great wine and cocktails. It’s great for dinner or just for enjoying a glass of wine. I’ve found they consistently have really interesting bottles of wine available by the glass.
High Jinks
New Acton
High Jinks is located in New Acton downstairs from the fantastic Ily restaurant. It’s cosy and intimate with a neighbourhood vibe. They also have a small selection of Pizza’s and snacks available.
Bar Beirut
Garema Place, City
I haven’t managed to check out Bar Beirut yet but it comes highly recommended. Bar Beirut is Canberra’s go-to late-night cocktail and mezze bar, serving up great food, drinks and music from the early evening to the early morning
Wakefields Bar and Wine
Ainslie
Wakefields is part of Edgars Inn at Ainslie. It’s located around the corner and up the stairs. Expect a selection of excellent food and wine in an intimate neighbourhood space. There’s a particular focus on Australian Wines and local produce.
Volstead Repeal
Braddon
A new entry to this list Volstead Repeal is located in the Yamaroshi building. Volstead has a huge Whiskey collection and an extensive cocktail menu. The bar has an intimate and friendly neighbourhood vibe.
Midnight Bar
Braddon
Located in the Midnight Development and part of the Midnight hotel, Midnight Bar is the perfect place for after work drinks. It’s cocktail selection is excellent and the bar offers a full menu for dining.
Hippo Co
City
Located in a small space above Garema Place, Hippo Co has stood the test of time and continues to deliver with excellent cocktails, and an extensive whisky menu. It’s perfect for after dinner drinks in a relaxed and intimate space. On Mondays and Wednesdays there is live music.
Blackbird
Braddon
Located underground on East Row where Suki Suki used to be, Blackbird is a small with live music, a DJ and popcorn??? At times it can be relaxed and chill and other times more a party atmosphere.
Knightsbridge Penthouse
Braddon
Knightsbridge moved from its old location a little further down the street, but it maintains it’s eclectic vibe. Knightsbridge is more of a club on the weekends with a DJ and dance floor but is quieter during the week.
Alcove
Braddon
I’ve yet to try Alcove but I’m excited to go. It’s a modern Cocktail Bar (a much needed alternative to the all to common speakeasy).
Highball Express
Highball Express is a Cuban inspired bar located in the city. The cocktails are mainly focus around Rum and they also offer a huge selection of speciality Rums.
Highball is currently closed while they build a new venue at a larger location. I’m not sure what venue will be taking over the existing space.
