The Best 5 Star Hotels in Canberra

Here are the best 5 star hotels in Canberra:

The Hyatt Hotel is a true 5 star hotel in Canberra. It’s located just south of Lake Burley Griffin and is within walking distance of The National Library, Parliament House, Old Parliament House and The National Gallery.

Hotel Realm

The Hotel Realm is a 5 star hotel in Barton

The Hotel Realm is located in Barton. It’s a little bit further away many of Canberra’s main attractions but is still centrally located. The Hotel Realm Precinct is home to many great restaurants and bars. As a guest of the hotel you’ll also have access to the luxurious Hale Gym and Evo Health Club.

Personally I’ve the Hyatt and Ovolo to be more luxurious and offer a traditional 5 star hotel experience. While the Realm is still good, it’s not quite to the same standard.

Other Luxury Hotels in Canberra

Jamala Wildlife Lodge

The Jamala Wildlife lodge is more of an experience than a hotel. It is a luxury 5 star experience but it’s located in the National Zoo and Aquarium. Your stay includes a tour, group dinner and accomodation in a number of themed rooms which are located in or next to animal enclosures.

A stay at Jamala is very expensive, but it’s a once in a lifetime experience.

Avenue Hotel

The Avenue Hotel is a luxury hotel located right in the centre of Canberra. While I don’t consider it a true 5 star hotel, it is still an excellent hotel. Its location means you can easily walk into Braddon and Lonsdale Street as well as into the city. The Avenue is an Apartment Hotel so it’s perfect if you’re looking for a luxury hotel that is also suitable for families.

Midnight Hotel

We consider the Midnight Hotel to be a 4.5 star hotel. Its rooms are excellent but not quite up to the 5 star standard. The Midnight Hotel is located in Braddon. If you’re looking for a hotel that is close to Canberra’s nightlife this is a great option. The Midnight also has its own bar which is popular of an evening and I’ve always enjoyed eating the Braddon Merchant – the hotel’s restaurant.

Why aren’t there more 5 Star Hotels in Canberra?

Canberra’s hotel scene is still in its infancy. More and more people are visiting Canberra each year and new hotels are starting to pop up. Unfortunately many of the bigger hotels brands like Marriot, Hilton, Mandarin Oriental and W don’t have a presence in Canberra.

I’m sure we’ll see more and more 5 star hotels in Canberra over the coming decade. Recently Marriot opened the Midnight Hotel which is part of their Autograph series. While I don’t consider it a true 5 star hotel, it is still very good.

Hilton was planning on building a luxury hotel in Canberra as part of a Garema Place development, however those plans have yet to go anywhere. But it does show there is definitely demand for more 5 star hotels in Canberra.
